Health and Safety Executive (HSE)

Health and Safety at work Act 1974

Employers must ensure the health and safety of their employees, including first aid provisions. First aid courses for workplaces must:

  • Be tailored to meet the risk profile of the workplace (e.g., construction sites may need more extensive training).

  • Provide employees with the knowledge to handle emergencies until professional help arrives.

  • Include risk assessments to determine how many first aiders are required in different workplaces.

Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981

These regulations outline the minimum requirements for first aid in the workplace. First aid courses should meet these standards:

  • Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) or First Aid at Work (FAW) courses are commonly required for workplaces.

  • Courses must cover essential skills, including CPR, AED use, managing choking, and treating injuries like bleeding or fractures.

  • The training should be delivered by HSE-approved organizations or accredited trainers.

Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992

If the workplace involves lifting, carrying, or moving heavy loads, first aid courses should cover basic manual handling and injury prevention, addressing:

  • Common manual handling injuries (e.g., strains, sprains).

  • Correct lifting techniques to reduce risk.
